Hey great program! It helps a lot when you are in a hurry and you don't have time to read everyword that you wrote. It is also great for people who don't have wordcount tool on Open HOuse or Microsoft Word or Word Pad.

Very helpful tool. Simple, fast, and free and you don't have to sign up for anything. What more could you ask for?

Excellent little tool... allows me to type in a basic program (Notepad) without having to bother opening up a more robust and power hungry application.

It works only with English. Other languages use different letters, not just [a-zA-Z]! I think you can also parametrize your tool (e.g. treat numbers as words or not, don't count CAPSLOCKWORDS, use stopwords list etc.).
Sorry, but to me your app uses just the simplest regexes and is not impressive - there are lots of challenges...
On the other hand such simple version in the most common cases is useful.

It's good but I have to scroll down using Firefox to see how many words there are. It would save some internet-time if you could move the word count to the right side of the field where you paste your text. Thank you!

I am a college student and have found that this was a great tool to find on the internet. Words are hard to count when you don't "actually" count each individual word, as some one letter and two letter words don't count. It helps me to get that grade I need and makes the effort with it. It really "counts" when you have a counter. Thank you for making this tool available to us and easy to use. I love how it is on only one page and there is no other BS to go through before I get to the only page I'm here to see. Quick in and quick out, it's just the way of today's society and it seeems to work best without the hassel. Thanks again. Please keep it around. I'll pass the word to my classmates since I am in an online classroom. Everything we do is online.

first off "Jeremy" below is false. There isn't supposed to be a grammar check. It's called a "word counter" for a reason, it counts words. That's it's sole purpose. but nonetheless it does it well. i do not have microsoft word on my computer, so i type everything up in my e-mail and then submit it here. it hasn't failed me yet.

The tool appears to be over-counting the words. What MS Word counted as about 67,000 words, the Word Count Tool counted as about 69,000. I then counted out a 120-word portion: MS Word correctly counted it as 120 words, but the Word Count Tool counted it as 121 words.

I was considering suggesting that our school offer a permanent link to WordCountTool.com, but then I saw the link for the Kick Ass "game" on facebook. I really do not think that is an appropriate thing to associate with a service that is marketed to students. I am disappointed you have chosen to do that.

For languages using accented characters, the count is completely wrong: if I write société, which is obviously one word, the program counts 2! Are letters of the extended character set considered as symbols?

Amazing tool! Saves valuable time from having to open up word, wait for it start, paste and then see word count. It is so simple and effective. Love it!

If it had an extension so that you could select any text from any website, just click on extension and it would give you word count, it would be great! But just a suggestion :)

First, I think it's a great tool, function but with room for improvement.
The layout seems restrictive with a fixed width and small input space.
I saw the 'rules' on what is counter, it would be nice if they were modifiable in an 'advanced' tab.

I love this website, I use Open Office because my Microsoft Word has been erm....gay. I have yet to fix it, and from what I have seen, Open Office in all of it's awesomeness doesn't have a word counter! : (

Are the articles (a,an,and the) too counted in the word count? These three are not among the parts of speech thus they are not counted as 'words'.

I don't have microsoft word on this computer so it made it a lot easier than guessing or using sending it to my other computer. Only thing I don't like is that I wanted to delete my notes which I included in the paper which I will not remove until the end and to do that I couldn't scroll up and then click where I want to delete(had to highlight the whole area and then delete.)

Great service i thought there would be no such service but randomly typed in 'word counter' as my microsoft word was not working so had to use note pad which does not have wrd counter tool and this service came up at the top and was very usefull to me ..... Solid site. Might want to modify it so that after the first click inside the box, the next time you click it doesn't remove all the text again... I wanted to copy my doc in and remove my block quotes and titles, but every time you click in the box it removes all the text. Other than that solid tool, thanks!

This is the second year I am using this for NaNoWriMo, I use notepad to write, so obviously no word count tool. This is very helpful to me, though oddly, the NaNoWriMo Counter (usable only at the end of the month) counted fewer words last year... so hmmmm

This tool is for people who are too dumb to find the word count tool in their program. Even wordpad has a word count function. Hint: look in the Tools or Edit menus.

thank goodness i found this. windows 7 doesn't come with word, just wordpad which doesn't have word count so this is going to be really helpful.

This saved my life! I was trying to find a word-counting tool that matched the NaNoWriMo one at least fairly well, since it spazzed out on me, but none of the ones I found seemed to have the right word counts - until I remembered a link posted on my website, and found this. Thank you so much!

Useful tool, but every word count tool I have come across on the net gives a different number of words.. Hard to tell which one is correct without counting every word manually
