How reading time is calculated
Reading time is calculated from word count divided by reading rate. The two rates that matter most:
Silent reading: 200–300 words per minute (the average adult reads at 250 WPM).
Speaking aloud: 130 words per minute (typical podcast / conference pace).
This calculator defaults to 250 WPM for reading and 130 WPM for speaking — the same rates used by the Word Counter sidebar.

Why reading time matters for SEO and UX
Most blog platforms (Medium, Substack, WordPress) display estimated reading time at the top of an article because users scan for it before committing to read. A "12-min read" badge sets expectation; a missing one is a friction point. For SEO, displaying reading time has no direct ranking effect, but it correlates with user-engagement metrics that matter (time on page, scroll depth, return rate).
Faster than 250 WPM?
Practiced readers comfortably exceed 300 WPM. Skim-reading (which doesn't fully comprehend the text) reaches 500–700 WPM. Above 1,000 WPM is speed-reading territory, where comprehension drops dramatically — most reading-comprehension research finds no benefit beyond about 400 WPM for serious reading.
About 4 minutes silently at 250 WPM, or about 8 minutes spoken aloud at 130 WPM.
What's the average reading speed?
The average adult silent reading speed is 250 WPM with full comprehension. Skim-reading is faster but at the cost of detail recall.
Why is silent reading faster than reading aloud?
Silent reading skips subvocalisation — the mouth and vocal cords are slower than the eye. Reading aloud is bound by speech rate, which caps around 200 WPM for most speakers.
Should I trust the displayed reading time on a blog post?
It's an estimate. Most platforms use 200–300 WPM and assume pure body text. Articles with code, tables, or images take longer in practice.
Can I customise the WPM rate?
Use the words-to-minutes calculator if you need a specific rate (formal speech 100, audiobook 150, fast podcast 200, speed reader 400+).
