The simple answer: the number of pages depends on font, font size, line spacing, and margin width. The defaults most word processors ship with โ 12pt Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, US Letter โ produce roughly 500 words per single-spaced page, 333 words per 1.5-spaced page, and 250 words per double-spaced page.
Switching the font alone can swing the count by 10โ20%. Courier (a monospace font) packs significantly fewer characters per line than Calibri or Arial, so a Courier page is shorter.
Double spacing puts a full blank line between every line of text, so the same word count fills exactly twice as many pages as it does single-spaced. 1.5 spacing sits between the two at about two-thirds of the double-spaced length. Almost every academic submission is double-spaced; most business and web documents are single-spaced.
If you're submitting academic work, the style guide fixes the formatting for you โ so the page count is predictable once you know which one applies.
| Style | Required format | Words per page |
|---|---|---|
| MLA 9 | 12pt Times New Roman, double-spaced, 1-inch margins | ~250 |
| APA 7 | 12pt Times New Roman / 11pt Calibri / 11pt Arial, double-spaced | ~250โ280 |
| Chicago (Turabian) | 12pt readable serif, double-spaced | ~250 |
| Harvard | 12pt Arial or Times, double-spaced | ~250 |
All four count body text only โ title pages, abstracts, reference lists, and appendices are paginated separately.
A4 (210 ร 297 mm) is narrower and taller than US Letter (8.5 ร 11 in). At 1-inch margins the A4 text area is roughly 6% larger, so the same text runs about 6% shorter on A4. US Letter is standard in the US and Canada; A4 is standard almost everywhere else, so check which one your institution expects.

Generic words-to-pages tools assume a single configuration. Real assignments specify constraints: 12pt Times New Roman double-spaced is the default for most US college essays, but legal briefs use 14pt with 1.5 line spacing, and many style guides allow Calibri 11pt single-spaced. The right answer depends on which document you're producing.
