The simple answer: the number of pages depends on font, font size, line spacing, and margin width. The defaults most word processors ship with — 12pt Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, US Letter — produce roughly 500 words per single-spaced page, 333 words per 1.5-spaced page, and 250 words per double-spaced page.
Switching the font alone can swing the count by 10–20%. Courier (a monospace font) packs significantly fewer characters per line than Calibri or Arial, so a Courier page is shorter.
| Words | Single-spaced (12pt Times) | Double-spaced (12pt Times) |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | ½ page | 1 page |
| 500 | 1 page | 2 pages |
| 750 | 1½ pages | 3 pages |
| 1,000 | 2 pages | 4 pages |
| 1,500 | 3 pages | 6 pages |
| 2,000 | 4 pages | 8 pages |
| 2,500 | 5 pages | 10 pages |
| 5,000 | 10 pages | 20 pages |
| 10,000 | 20 pages | 40 pages |
| 50,000 | 100 pages | 200 pages |
Generic words-to-pages tools assume a single configuration. Real assignments specify constraints: 12pt Times New Roman double-spaced is the default for most US college essays, but legal briefs use 14pt with 1.5 line spacing, and many style guides allow Calibri 11pt single-spaced. The right answer depends on which document you're producing.
