What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is dummy text used since the 1500s by typesetters as placeholder copy when laying out a page. The standard passage begins "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" and is a scrambled, lightly-corrupted version of a passage by Cicero (De finibus bonorum et malorum, 45 BC). The corruption is intentional: it produces letter and word lengths that look like real Latin but is unreadable, so designers can preview type without being distracted by content.
When to use Lorem Ipsum
- Mockups and wireframes — when the layout needs sample text but the real copy isn't ready.
- Type-setting and font tests — to evaluate readability and spacing.
- Component libraries — placeholder strings in Storybook or Figma.
- Print proofs — before final copy is approved.
Don't use lorem ipsum in shipped products — focus groups consistently rate UIs with placeholder text as worse than the same UI with real content. Real content reveals constraints (long names, edge cases, awkward truncations) that dummy text hides.

Is Lorem Ipsum real Latin?
It started as real Latin (Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum) but was deliberately corrupted by Renaissance typesetters. The most quoted passages have been so heavily rearranged that they no longer translate.
How many words is a typical lorem ipsum paragraph?

Why do designers use lorem ipsum instead of English placeholder?
Real-language placeholder text ("the quick brown fox…") is meaningful and pulls attention away from the design. Latin-looking nonsense reads as text-shaped texture without competing for cognitive bandwidth.
Is it OK to ship lorem ipsum to production?
No. Real content reveals layout edge cases (very long names, very short titles, missing values) that lorem ipsum hides. Designers who skip the real-content review almost always discover these issues post-launch.
