Indonesian was historically written in Arabic-derived Jawi script. After independence in 1945, the country standardised on the Latin alphabet. The 1972 Spelling Reform (Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan, EYD) coordinated Indonesian spelling with Malaysian Malay, making the two languages closer in writing than they had been previously.

Indonesian is one of the most learner-friendly languages in the world: no tones, no grammatical gender, no verb conjugation by tense, very regular spelling. Its vocabulary is heavily influenced by Sanskrit, Arabic, Portuguese, Dutch, and English — reflecting Indonesia's complex history.

Indonesian typography for designers

Indonesian typography is the easiest non-English Latin localization. The 26-letter Latin alphabet is used without any diacritics or special marks. Indonesian words tend to be moderate in length — agglutinative prefixes and suffixes (memper-, ke-an, di-) can lengthen words but rarely as dramatically as Turkish or Vietnamese.
