How to find word count in Google Docs

  1. Tools → Word count, or keyboard shortcut Cmd+Shift+C (Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows).
  2. The dialog shows pages, words, characters, characters excluding spaces.
  3. Tick "Display word count while typing" inside that dialog to see a live count in the bottom-left.

The privacy difference

Google Docs is a cloud-based editor — your draft is uploaded to and processed on Google servers. Our Word Counter runs entirely in your browser. For confidential drafts (legal documents, NDAs, sensitive business writing), the difference is meaningful.

When Google Docs is the right tool

  • Collaborative editing — real-time co-authoring is Google Docs' core strength.
  • Cloud-synced documents — accessible from any device, no file management.
  • Comment threads — collaborator feedback inline.
  • Version history — revert to any prior state.

When Word Count Tool is faster

  • Quick paste-and-count for any text snippet.
  • Live readability scoring — Google Docs needs an add-on; we show six scores by default.
  • SEO keyword density as you write.
  • No-signup access — open the URL, count, leave.
  • Embeddable in your own site via /widgets.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Docs show reading time?
No, not natively. Add-ons like Word Counter Plus add reading time. Our Word Counter shows it by default, no add-on needed.
Does Google Docs count words while I type?
Only if you enable it: open Tools → Word count and tick "Display word count while typing". Then a live count appears in the bottom-left of the editor.
Are word counts identical between Google Docs and our counter?
Yes — both follow the same convention (whitespace-separated tokens, hyphenated compounds = 1 word, contractions = 1 word). On standard prose they agree to within 1%.
Can I see readability scores in Google Docs?
Not by default. You need an add-on like "Readability Score" or "Word Counter Plus". Our counter shows six readability formulas live as you type.
Is my text private when I use Google Docs?
Google states it doesn't read your documents for advertising, but the text is stored on Google servers. For maximum privacy use our browser-only Word Counter or an offline editor.
