2 Minute Typing Test

The 2-minute typing test gives a more stable, fatigue-aware reading than the standard 1-minute. Useful for endurance practice and pre-certification prep.

0 WPM 100% accuracy 120s

Two minutes doubles the data points of the standard 1-minute test, and starts to surface fatigue effects that the shorter test hides. If your 1-minute WPM is great but your 2-minute is significantly slower, you're sprint-typing rather than maintaining a sustainable pace — important to know for office work or transcription where you'll type for hours.

What to expect at this duration

Average adults type 80–90 words in 2 minutes. The number alone matters less than how it compares to twice your 1-minute score — equality means good endurance, drop-off means you fade.

When to use the 2 Minute Typing Test

  • Fatigue-aware WPM measurement
  • Pre-test for typing certifications that run 3–10 minutes
  • More-stable measurement than 1 minute (less noise from random bad passages)
  • Practice for sustained-typing roles (data entry, transcription)

How WPM is calculated

WPM (words per minute) is calculated from 5-character blocks rather than literal words: WPM = correct_characters / 5 / minutes. Errors don't count toward your score — only correctly-typed characters increment the total. This rewards accuracy as much as raw speed.

Frequently asked questions

Should my 2-minute WPM equal my 1-minute WPM?
Roughly yes, for sustainable typing speeds. If your 2-minute WPM is more than 5–10% lower than your 1-minute, you're sprint-typing in shorter tests.
Is 2 minutes long enough to detect fatigue?
Slight fatigue, yes. For full-fatigue testing (matching real-world office typing), use the 5-minute or 10-minute test.
Does typing speed degrade over a 2-minute test?
For most adults, only a little (1–3 WPM). Touch typists with good technique can sustain their full speed for 2 minutes; hunt-and-peck typists fatigue noticeably even in 2 minutes.
